How to Make a Design Wall like Eleanor’s

Eleanor Burns' Design Wall

Many of you have asked us how to make a quilt design wall as seen in Eleanor’s Koala Studio Makeover video. Well, we went straight to the source and found these instructions just for you!

How to make a Quilt in a Day Design Wall Items Required:

(2) Spray contact cement

(4) “L” brackets

9′ x 5′ Headliner from an upholstery shop

3/4″ screws

4′ x 8′ Sound board chop saw keyhole hooks, knife or scissors

(4) Wall anchors with screws

(2) “T” brackets

(4) 1″ X 4″ X 8′ pine boards

Making the sound board

1. Measure headliner to appropriate length. Allow an extra 4 inches to hang over on each side.

2. Apply the glue thoroughly to soundboard and back of the headliner. Allow 15-20 minutes for the glue to get tacky. It’s easier to do halves.

3. When the soundboard is tacky, apply headliner to the soundboard. The headliner will stick immediately on contact. Use a friend to help make sure you have it aligned properly to cover the board with equal edges on all sides. Once the headliner has touched the surface, it may be impossible to re-align.

4. Turn project over and apply contact cement the edges where the headliner may touch. Allow 15-20 minutes to insure tact.

5. Fold over the headliner and attach it to the sound wall. Allow the corners to be even.

6. Trim off headliner ears. When laying down the headliner, try to avoid overlapping the edges.

Making the Frame:

1. Cut (2) 1″ X 4″s into three 40″ boards.

2. Attach the 1″ X 4″ to make a 4′ X 8′ frame with your “T” brackets and “L” brackets.

3. Apply adhesive caulking to one side of the frame.

4. Press frame to the back of the soundboard. Put weights on the frame to help press it down. Let dry.

5. Screw key hooks to the back frame and to wall where desired.

No Room is too Small for a Koala Studio

On Share your Studio, Noreen C. and Auturo G. show how a small space is no match for a Koala Studio. “It is compact, but my Koala sewing cabinet can be adjusted to meet my needs and space. I can easily use both sewing machines and serger. When I use both machines I just roll in the serger cabinet and sew away,” says Arturo. If you have a studio and would like to share it, please submit a picture or two, here.

The Koala Studio Advantage

Do you know the difference between a sewing cabinet and  Koala Studio?

A cabinet, by definition, is an upright cupboard-like repository with shelves, drawers or compartments, for storing or displaying objects.

A studio, by definition, is an artist’s place of work.

Koala has two booths at Paducah.  One is in the big tent, the other is in Eleanor Burns’ barn in Carson Park at 28th and Madison in Paducah. Click here for a map of these locations.

The producers of the AQS Quilt Show in Paducah have posted a special announcement on their website regarding the relocation of some events due to flooding. Read below for a description of where things will be moved.

April 25, 2011, Paducah, Ky., – Due to high water along the lower Ohio River at Paducah, the floodgates that protect the city are being installed. To protect the safety of visitors to the American Quilter’s Society annual Quilt Show & Contest, events usually held at the Paducah-McCracken County Expo and Julian C. Carroll Convention Center have been moved.

Best of Show, category winners, and bed quilts will be on display at the Pavilion at the corner of 4th Street and Executive Boulevard. Vendors that were in the Expo Center will be there, too.

At Kentucky Oaks Mall, 3470 James Sanders Boulevard, The Alliance for American Quilts display will be at Circuit City. The Pilgrim/Roy 2012 Challenge display and AQS Lancaster 2011 winners will be at Office Max, also at the mall. Vendors that were in the convention center will be located at Circuit City. Vendors that were in the Pavilion will be at Office Max.

All classes and lectures and All Star Review will be held at First Baptist Church, 2890 Broadway, where the Wall Quilt contest and winners will be displayed.

The Food Tent will relocate just two blocks to the Farmers Market located behind the museum at the T-intersection of 2nd Street and Monroe. As always, there will be Vendors on Kentucky at 200 Kentucky Avenue, also known as the Finkel Building, and the Hurt Book Sale.

Events planned for Carson Four Rivers Center and The National Quilt Museum will continue in place. The Yo Yo ladies, Live Auction, and Silent Auction will be at The National Quilt Museum. Shuttles will run between all venues so visiting quilters may travel safely. A little water can’t stop the 2011 AQS Quilt Show in Paducah. Come see us!
